service will targeted community in the Twin Cities area and nearby towns. Targeted community means placing emphasis on serving individuals who are
low-income, 60 years of age and older, or are minority, have limited
English speaking ability. All funds and other resources of this
organization will be devoted to this purpose. The overall mission of
African Community Senior Services is to build viable elderly service
by providing transportation and outreach (interpreting, connecting
seniors to local resources, and monitoring well-being of frail
seniors). Available resources are staff and volunteers.
The number of African immigrants in Minnesota, especially in the
Twin-Cities and the surrounding areas, has increased in last decade
and half. Minnesota is now home for the largest Somali Community in
the United States. According to Minnesota Department of Human
Services, there were 2629 Somali seniors over the age of 60 or older
who lived in the twin-cities in 2010. Due to continued resettlement of
the African refugees to Minnesota since 2005, senior population of
this community is considerably more than 2629 now. Most of these
seniors cannot read, write or speak English. As result, they cannot
read transportation instruction such as street names, signs, and
directions.  This language barrier limits their ability to utilize
public transportation. These immigrant seniors also have difficulties
in knowing about community resource available to them. To support
these seniors, African Community Senior Services was created to bring
together all community resources (volunteers, donations, and grants)
in order to address these important needs.
African Community Senior Services will form coordination agreement
with other non profit community organizations and we will work with other local
providers when there is need and capacity to do so.

African Community Senior Services will educate the public by Writing
flyers/brochures and making them available at local community
organizations such as Confederate Somali Community of Minnesota
(largest Somali Community in Minnesota), and African Community.
Placing ads in the local community media such as Somali Yellow Pages,
and Somali TV.
Distributing flyers and brochures at community meeting places such as
places of worship, schools, and business (restaurants and grocery
